Following a momentous decision by the UK Supreme Court, which ruled that the Prime Minister’s decision to prorogue Parliament was unlawful, Parliament sat again on Wednesday, 25 September. The Prime Minister flew back from the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he had held bilateral meetings with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and President of the European Council, Donald Tusk.

The Prime Minister has said that he wishes to agree a new deal with the EU before the European Council meeting on 17-18 October. However, EU sources continue to say that UK papers fail to provide legally operable alternatives to the backstop, leading European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to call for more substantive proposals from London
