In this short article on behalf of the IIEA’s UK Group, John Temple Lang notes that in the public discussion about Brexit, there are a number of phrases which though widely used are little understood, and have caused some confusion. This is particularly true of phrases such as “hard border” and “soft border”, which are used frequently in the debate over Northern Ireland and the controversial ‘backstop’ solution.
