About the Speech: In her address Professor Moloney speculated as to the appropriate role of the EU in regulating financial markets in the wake of the seismic crisis-era reforms, and in light of current Capital Market Union developments, and the prospect of tensions between the euro area and the single market. She suggested that while reforms remain necessary, a period of ‘tinkering under the bonnet’ rather than of ‘grand designs’ is required. She called for a stronger commitment to institutional reform, as well as to robust rule supervision and enforcement, and suggested that a focus on the household investor – long the Cinderella of this area – is long overdue.
