About the Speech:    Following the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, the stabilisation of financial markets became a priority for Europe, and was followed by a period of intensive reforms in the EU. The June 2015 Report of the Five Presidents praised the measures taken to date, but called for more to be done to ensure the future stability of the European financial sector. The report called, in particular, for the completion of the remaining elements of the Banking Union, and the creation of a Capital Markets Union.   This IIEA seminar will examine the creation of the Banking Union and assess the current state of play, before discussing Capital Markets Union, the next major step in financial sector reform.

About the Speakers:   Speakers at this event will include Pat McArdle, Chair of the IIEA’s Banking Union group, and author of the IIEA book Banking Union: Progress and Prospects; Baroness Sharon Bowles, former Chair of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee of the European Parliament; and Niall Bohan, Head of Unit for Capital Markets Union, European Commission.
