Building on the recent experience of the Estonian Presidency in the Council of the EU, Deputy Minister Maasikas reflected on issues which will have an impact on the EU27 post-Brexit, such as negotiating the next MFF period and institutional change. In his address, the Deputy Minister payed particular attention to the end of the current European Commission cycle and the next European Parliament elections in 2019.

Matti Maasikas has been Deputy Minister for EU Affairs of Estonia since 2016. Within this role he serves as head of Estonia’s inter-ministerial Brexit Task Force. He was also the main coordinator of the recent Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU. He has had a long and distinguished diplomatic career which has spanned 25 years. He most recently served as Estonia’s Permanent Representative to the EU between 2011 and 2016. He also served as Secretary General of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2005 and 2008.
