Chancellor Merkel established her leadership credentials in Europe dealing with the migration crisis, the Russia/Ukraine crisis and the Euro crisis. In her address, Ms. Dempsey argued that Germany’s approach to the Brexit negotiations will play a significant role in determining the future of the EU and reflected on Chancellor Merkel’s view of an EU without the UK.

Judy Dempsey is a Nonresident Senior Associate at Carnegie Europe and Editor in Chief of Strategic Europe. Her previous positions include former Columnist for the International Herald Tribune and Diplomatic Correspondent for the Financial Times in Brussels. Ms. Dempsey graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, where she studied history and political science. She is also the author of the book The Merkel Phenomenon (2013).
