As terrorist attacks continue to occur across the EU, the need to strengthen capacity in the common fight against terrorism and crime has become one of the central themes for the European Union. In March 2016, President Jean-Claude Juncker called for a European Security Union and in September of that year, Sir Julian King was nominated as Commissioner for the Security Union. Cyber attacks, cyber security and cyber resilience are now central issues in national and global security agendas. In his address, Commissioner King identified the steps being taken to counter terrorism and rapidly evolving cyber threats to create a safer union for its citizens.
About the Speaker:
In August 2016, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker nominated Sir Julian King for the new post of Commissioner for the Security Union. Prior to this appointment, Commissioner King was the British Ambassador to France. From 2011-2015, he was the Director General of the Northern Ireland Office and then Director General of Economic & Consular Affairs in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Commissioner King was the British Ambassador to Ireland for 2009-2011. From 2004 to 2009, Commissioner King was the UK Representative on the EU Political and Security Committee, which he chaired during the 2005 UK Presidency.
