In his address to the IIEA, Minister Klimkin provided an update on the current situation in Crimea and the implications of the continuing conflict in parts of the Donbas region. In this context, Minister Klimkin discussed the June meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine, Germany, France and Russia, which dealt with the implementation of the Minsk Agreements and the deployment of UN Peacekeepers. He also reflected on reforms in Ukraine and the challenges and successes encountered thus far in Ukraine’s journey along its Euro-Atlantic path.
About the Speaker:
Minister Pavlo Klimkin has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine since June 2014. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology with a Master’s degree in Physics and Mathematics in 1991. He has held several positions in the Ukrainian government, serving as Director of the EU Department at the MFA of Ukraine from 2008-2010 and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine from 2010-2011, during which time he played a central role in the negotiation of the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement, which was implemented in 2017. He also served as Deputy Minister and Head of Staff from 2011-2012.
