About the Speech:
In his address, Mr Mihnea Motoc outlined the different scenarios for moving towards a European Security and Defence Union. Drawing on the Commission reflection paper on European defence, Mr Motoc also reflected on how the EU institutions can help strengthen the protection and security of the European citizen.
About the Speaker:
Mihnea Motoc is Deputy Head of the European Political Strategy Centre, where he provides strategic advice to President Jean-Claude Juncker. From 2015 to 2017, he served as Romania’s Minister of National Defence. Before this, Mr Motoc had a distinguished career in Romania’s diplomatic service, having served as Permanent Representative to the European Union from 2008 to 2015, as well as Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 2003 to 2008. He also served as Ambassador to the Netherlands from 1999 to 2001.
