About the speech : With an unprecedented refugee crisis converging in Europe, a continuously tense situation in the Middle East as well as between Russia and Ukraine, and persistent risks in the euro area, German policymakers have found themselves at the forefront of crisis management in the EU for a number of years. The multiple crises simultaneously provide opportunities for German leadership and reveal its limits. Dr. Daniela Schwarzer assessed the complexity of the situation in the EU in light of multiple ongoing crises and growing disintegrative tendencies. She discussed the role Germany has played in recent years and might play in the future – both in terms of crisis management and shaping the EU.
About the Speaker: Dr. Daniela Schwarzer is the senior director of research and the director of the Europe Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF). Dr. Schwarzer is a senior research professor at SAIS, Johns Hopkins, in Washington, D.C. and Bologna. She has been an adjunct faculty member of the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin since 2010. She has held advisory positions for the French and Polish governments and was France correspondent for the Financial Times Deutschland from 1999 to 2004.
