About the Event:
In her address, Dr de Hoop Scheffer reflected on how international developments such as Brexit, the new Trump administration, the resurgence of Russia and the rise of the so-called Islamic State group have prompted responses from the French Presidential candidates on their foreign policy positions. She argued that the main dividing lines in this Presidential campaign surround France’s future relations with the EU, with the US under President Trump, and attitudes to globalization. Finally, she explored how the Presidential elections will impact on the French-US “special relationship” in terms of defence cooperation and evaluated the potential for a convergence or divergence of views within this relationship in the future.
About the Speaker:
Dr Alexandra de Hoop Scheffer, is currently the Director of the Paris Office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. From 2009 to 2011, she served as a special adviser on transatlantic relations in the Policy Planning Department of the French Foreign Ministry. From 2010 to 2013, she was an advisor to USEUCOM Commander and SACEUR, Admiral James Stavridis. From 2006 to 2009, she served as a consultant for the French Defence Ministry on U.S. foreign policy, transatlantic security cooperation and post-conflict reconstruction.
