In her address to the IIEA, Dr Sloat analysed how the conflicts in Syria have affected Turkey’s relations with the United States, addressing disagreements over priorities and tactics – paying particular attention to the challenge created by American military cooperation with a faction of Syrian Kurds. She also considered the way forward after there were coalition air strikes in response to the regime’s alleged use of chemical weapons and ongoing efforts to resolve the civil war following the defeat of the Islamic State.

Amanda Sloat is a Robert Bosch Senior Fellow in the Centre on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution where her research focuses on Turkey and Southern Europe, UK politics, EU foreign policy, and trans-Atlantic relations. She is also a Non-resident Fellow in the Ash Center at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She previously served in the US government for almost a decade, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Europe and Eastern Mediterranean Affairs at the State Department. She holds a PhD in Politics from University of Edinburgh and a BA in Political Theory from James Madison College at Michigan State University.
