The collapse of Syria, the rise of Isis and the revolution that was the ‘Arab spring’ have set new challenges to the West and, according to Mr. Hussey, France remains a key adversary for global jihadists.
In his lecture, Mr. Hussey explored the current situation in France in view of its past colonial history and the recent terrorist attacks and considered the likely scenarios in the run up to the French Presidential elections.

Andrew Hussey OBE is Professor of Cultural History in the School of Advanced Study, University of London, where he is also Director of the Centre of Post-Colonial Studies. He is the author of French Intifada: The Long War Between France and its Arabs, which is a bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. He has been described by the Guardian as ‘the UK’s leading commentator on France’ and is also a freelance journalist for the Observer, the New Statesman and the New York Times. He also makes documentaries for BBC and Channel 4.
