In her address, Dr Saltman discusses how Facebook develops and operationalises global policies for countering terrorism and violent extremism. She focuses on internal policy processes, how artificial intelligence and algorithms are used, as well as key global partnerships to achieve similar goals. She also considers different approaches to hate speech and highlight ways that Facebook engages with civil society and NGO partners to optimise grassroots voices in order to strategically counter extremism.
About the Speaker:
Dr Erin Marie Saltman is Facebook’s Policy Lead for Counterterrorism and Dangerous Organizations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Her background and expertise include processes of radicalisation within a range of regional and socio-political contexts. Her research and publications have focused on the evolving nature of online extremism and terrorism, gender dynamics within violent extremist organizations and youth radicalization. Dr Saltman also manages Facebook’s work with the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT).
