The COVID-19 pandemic constitutes an unprecedented challenge for the 27 Member States of the EU. In the spirit of solidarity, the EU has launched a coordinated and comprehensive strategy to deal with health emergency needs, to support economic activity and to prepare the ground for recovery. Mr Berrigan discusses the measures which have already been taken at the EU level, and discusses what else can and will be done to support Member States.

About the Speaker:
John Berrigan was appointed Director-General of DG FISMA in March 2020. Before assuming his current role, Mr Berrigan served as Deputy Director-General and Director for Financial System Surveillance and Crisis Management in DG FISMA. From 2000 to 2014, he worked in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN), first as Head of Unit for Financial Markets and Financial Intermediaries and then as Director for Financial Stability and Monetary Affairs. Mr Berrigan has a master’s degree in economics from University College Dublin
