An Irish and Swedish Perspective on the Future of the EU27

Ahead of this afternoon’s event at the IIEA, Minister Linde said: “In a time when EU cooperation is challenged by tensions, cooperation must continue to develop and improve. Not through major new projects that require treaty change, but by focusing on areas where there is added value in cooperating at a European level.”
She also added: “One of the most important questions for the EU in future years, is to create a situation where the benefits from growth and globalisation reach all citizens. We all share a responsibility and an interest in working for a much more inclusive and future-proof Europe.”
Minister McEntee said: “In Ireland, we have undertaken extensive analysis of the consequences of Brexit and our unequivocal conclusion is that our future interests are best served by remaining a fully committed member of the European Union, notwithstanding the UK’s departure.”
She added: “Like Sweden, we see it as the best instrument we have for addressing the new challenges we are facing, serving the needs of our citizens who want to live, study, work, move and prosper freely across the continent.”
About the Event:
As part of the IIEA’s Future of the EU27 Series, Ministers McEntee and Linde will both give keynote addresses in which they will outline the roles of Ireland and Sweden in the EU of 27. In their addresses, the Ministers will reflect on areas of potential policy alignment in the future and strategic alliances moving forward.
About the Speakers:
Minister McEntee was appointed Minister for European Affairs by An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar in June 2017. She was previously appointed Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People in May 2016. She has been a TD since May 2013.
Minister Linde was appointed Minister for EU Affairs and Trade in May 2016. Between 2014 and 2016 she was State Secretary to the Minister for Home Affairs. From 2000-2013, Minister Linde served as International Secretary of the Swedish Social Democrats Party.
