It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the launch of ‘Bear in Mind these Dead’ – The Omagh Bombing and Policing by Hugh Orde and Desmond Rea at the IIEA, 8 North Great George’s Street, on Tuesday, 11 October 2016 at 6p.m.
The Omagh bombing took place on 15 August 1998. It is widely considered to be the single worst atrocity of the Troubles. Occuring less than three months after the ratification of the historic Good Friday Agreement, the bombing was a pivotal moment in the fragile peace process taking hold at the time.
In response to allegations made against the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), the Office of the Police Ombudsman (OPONI) decided ‘to carry out a formal investigation as to whether any information of relevance to the bombing was available to the RUC prior to the Omagh bombing, and if such information did exist, whether it had been responded to appropriately by the RUC’.
The OPONI published its report on these matters six weeks after the Northern Ireland Policing Board took office, posing several tough challenges in the process.
