The European Union has seen a step change in counter-terrorism cooperation since the Paris attacks of January 2015. Much has been achieved since the ambitious statement by the Heads of State and Government on 12 February 2015 on the fight against the financing of terrorism and the need for increased sharing of information between the Member States. Gilles de Kerchove discussed the achievements to date and the challenges that lie ahead as Europe continues to grapple with a significant terrorist threat.

Gilles de Kerchove was appointed EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator on 19 September 2007. In this function, he coordinates the work of the European Union in the field of counter-terrorism and fosters better communication between the EU and third Countries to ensure that the Union plays an active role in the fight against terrorism. Mr de Kerchove was previously Director for Justice and Home Affairs at the EU Council General Secretariat from 1995 to 2007 and Deputy Secretary of the Convention which drafted the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union from 1999 to 2000.
