About the Speech:
In her address, Dr Tiilikainen discussed the implications of possible NATO membership for Finland, drawing on a study commissioned in 2016 by the Finnish Government. The study concluded that while Finland would be ready for accession in technical terms, that in strategic terms, the implications would be significant for the whole of Northern Europe. Furthermore, Dr Tiilikainen also discussed the current security-policy thinking in Finland and in the wider EU.
About the Speaker:
Dr Teija Tiilikainen is the Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA). Before her appointment to this position in 2010, Dr Tiilikainen was the Director of the Network of European Studies at the University of Helsinki (2003-2009). She also served as Secretary of State at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland from 2007 to 2008. Dr Tiilikainen was the Special Representative of the Prime Minister of Finland in the Convention on the Future of Europe in 2002-2003 and a member of the OSCE Panel of Eminent Persons on European Security as a Common Project led by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger in 2015.
