About the Speech:
United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous, delivered remarks on the global state of peacekeeping operations, as they strive to comply with ever-more complex mandates and to adapt to increasingly challenging and often dangerous operating environments. In particular, Under-Secretary-General Ladsous focused on how missions execute mandates in order to protect civilians threatened by conflict, which included efforts to increase the capabilities of peacekeeping operations and the push to enhance the performance of peacekeepers. In addition, he addressed the question of how peacekeeping is advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda. Finally, Under-Secretary-General Ladsous spoke on how the United Nations addresses issues of mission transition, from their initial mandate to longer-term engagements aimed at sustaining peace in post-conflict societies once the mission leaves.
About the Speaker:
United Nations Under-Secretary-General Hervé Ladsous has been Head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations since October 2011. From November 2010 to October 2011, he was Chief of Staff to the French Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, while from 2006-2010; he was France’s Ambassador to China. From 2003-2006, he was Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DG for Asia and Oceania. Prior to that, Under-Secretary-General Ladsous served as the French Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Vienna.
