About the Speech: Despite progress in understanding the nature and causes of malnutrition, it remains a problem of staggering proportions in both the developed and developing worlds. Nearly half of all countries face serious burdens of malnutrition and the number of people worldwide with vitamin and micronutrient deficiencies stands at approximately 2 billion. Questions remain on the role of agriculture in this dynamic, and how linkages between agriculture, nutrition and health can be strengthened for the benefit of millions around the world. This seminar, being held in association with Irish Aid and University College Cork, will explore these themes, beginning with the Irish launch of the Global Nutrition Report 2015, which assesses countries’ progress in meeting global nutrition targets. Subsequently, speakers will present the findings of the Irish Aid-funded AgriDiet project. Led by University College Cork over a three year period, the AgriDiet project aims to understand how agriculture impacts on the nutritional needs of households in vulnerable areas. Finally, Concern Worldwide will present its Community Resilience to Acute Malnutrition (CRAM) model, which aims to build resilience in vulnerable communities through integrated development programming.
