In her address to the Institute, Ms Sargentini discussed the broader issues surrounding the defence of the European Union’s values drawing on her experience as rapporteur of the European Parliament report which initiated Article 7 proceedings against Hungary. She outlined the process of drafting this report and examined what will happen next in these proceedings. Lastly, she analysed the capabilities of the EU more generally in dealing with threats to its values from within the Union.

 

About the Speaker:

Judith Sargentini has been an MEP for the GreenLeft Party since 2009. She is a Vice-Chair of the LIBE Committee and of the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Terrorism. In her distinguished time as an MEP, Ms Sargentini has been rapporteur on the anti-money laundering directive and shadow rapporteur on numerous files including asylum legislation and criminal law. Prior to becoming an MEP, she held various roles in communications and consultancy in the development and non-profit sector. She received her BA in Modern History and her MA in Arts from the University of Amsterdam.
