About the Speech: 25 years after reunification, and confronted with the challenges posed by the current European refugee crisis (the influx of asylum seekers and migrants), many Germans are asking themselves about the future identity of Germany and Germans. The Stuttgart historian, Gerhard Hirschfeld, discussed this issue both from a historical perspective, and in the context of current debates in Germany on the future of German identity.
About the Speaker: Gerhard Hirschfeld is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Stuttgart. From 1989 to 2011, he was Director of the Library of Contemporary History, one of Europe’s largest specialist libraries for contemporary history. He was President of the International Committee for the History of the Second World War from 2000-2010. He is the author of numerous publications, articles and essays on German and West-European 20th century history.
