State of the Union - A Perspective from the European Parliament

About the speech:

Since Klaus Welle’s appointment to Secretary-General of the European Parliament in 2009, the European Union has been faced with a number of unprecedented challenges and crises. Mr. Welle also took the helm of the Secretariat during a period of substantial institutional change, which saw the European Parliament’s role in the EU’s legislative architecture strengthened under the Lisbon Treaty. The coming months will be significant for the Parliament as the EU navigates its way through both the migration crisis and a possible “Brexit”.  In his address to the IIEA, Mr. Welle will discuss the current State of the Union from the perspective of the European Parliament.

About the speaker:

Mr. Welle has been Secretary-General of the European Parliament since March 2009. His distinguished career in the European Parliament spans over two decades, beginning in 1994 with his appointment to Secretary-General of the European People’s Party (EPP) until 2003. In 2004, he became Director-General for Internal Policies at the European Parliament.  Prior to his current tenure as Secretary-General, Mr. Welle served as Head of the Cabinet for the President of the European Parliament from 2007 until 2009.
