In 2015, climate cooperation became a central pillar of EU-China relations when the two countries committed to work together on developing a cost-effective, low-carbon economy while maintaining robust economic growth. In his address to the IIEA, Mr. Leinen analysed both the opportunities and challenges for enhanced EU-China climate cooperation, such as the development of digital technology, green financing and emission trading schemes.
About the Speaker:
Jo Leinen has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1999 where he chairs the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the People’s Republic of China. He became the President of the European Movement International in 2011, having served as its Vice President for eight years. In his tenure as an MEP, he has also chaired the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and presided over the Constitutional Affairs Committee. Between 1997 and 2005, he served as President of the Union of European Federalists. Before becoming an MEP, he was Minister for the Environment in the State Government of Saarland, Germany, from 1985 to 1994.
