As a global actor, the European Union faces major challenges and opportunities. In his address to the IIEA, Dr Powell explores the Union’s role in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable world, in which the survival of the rules-based international order that has served Europe so well can no longer be taken for granted. In particular, he examines how the EU should respond to the growing US-China rivalry, the future of the transatlantic relationship, and the debate over ‘strategic autonomy’. Dr Powell also reviews Spain’s contribution to the EU’s efforts to establish itself as a relevant and credible global actor.

About the Speaker:
Dr Charles Powell is Director of the Elcano Royal Institute, Spain’s leading international relations think-tank, and a Professor of Contemporary History at CEU San Pablo University. He has published widely on Spanish history, politics and foreign policy, with special emphasis on its European dimension. Dr. Powell obtained his D. Phil from Oxford University. In 2017, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for his services to British-Spanish relations.
