As the world faces an increasingly complex series of interlocking crises, the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda is a call to action for countries to rethink their commitment to international development. In this context, Minster McHugh outlined Ireland’s perspective on meeting the challenges to international development.
This event was the opening address of the 2017 Development Matters lecture series, which the IIEA is co-hosting with Irish Aid.
About the Speaker:
Joe McHugh T.D. was appointed Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development in May 2016. He was Minister of State with Special Responsibility for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources from 2014 to 2016. He previously held the position of Chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement. Minister McHugh previously served as Co-Chairperson of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly. He was first elected to the Dáil in the 2007 general election, having served in Seanad Éireann for five years as Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson on Community, Rural, Gaeltacht and Marine Affairs.
