In an event co-hosted by the Irish branch of the International Law Association (ILA), Professor Koh draws on his recent book The Trump Administration and International Law and offer a compelling new strategy for how to defend democracy, human rights and the rule of law at a time when authoritarian regimes around the world are on the rise. Professor Koh discusses the US President’s stance on the international legal process across a range of issues including: immigration and refugee law, human rights, climate change, denuclearisation, trade diplomacy, relations with North Korea, Russia and Ukraine, America’s “Forever War” against Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, and the ongoing tragedy in Syria
About the Speaker:
Harold Hongju Koh is Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law School. Professor Koh is one of the leading experts in the United States in public and private international law, national security law and human rights. From 2009 to 2013, Professor Koh was the Legal Advisor at the State Department, service for which he received the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award. He served as the fifteenth Dean of Yale Law School from 2004 until 2009 and from 1998 to 2001, he served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour.
He holds a B.A. degree from Harvard College and B.A. and M.A. degrees from Oxford University, where he was a Marshall Scholar. Professor Koh was awarded a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was Developments Editor of the Harvard Law Review.
