About the Speech: Since Mr. Tranholm-Mikkelsen’s appointment to Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union in April 2015, the European Union has been faced with a number of unprecedented challenges and crises. Over the coming months, consensus-building and cooperation in the Council will be needed more than ever as the EU navigates its way through both the migration crisis and a possible “Brexit”. In his address to the IIEA, Mr Tranholm-Mikkelsen discussed the current State of the Union from the perspective of the Council. About the Speaker: Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen is the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and was appointed to a five year term in April 2015. Mr. Tranholm-Mikkelsen has previously served in a number of positions in the Danish government and diplomatic service, including most recently as the Permanent Representative of Denmark to the EU from 2010-2015. Mr. Tranholm-Mikkelsen studied international relations in the London School of Economics and political science at the University of Aarhus.
