The election of President Trump has cast considerable doubt on the traditional dynamics of transatlantic relations. This uncertainty in relations between Europe and the US is underlined by the perceived lack of burden-sharing in defence spending and President Trump’s perception of the Alliance becoming obsolete. In her address, Ms Dempsey analysed President Trump’s ambivalence towards the EU and NATO, and the implications for European security.

Judy Dempsey is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at Carnegie Europe and Editor in Chief of the Strategic Europe blog. She worked for the International Herald Tribune from 2004-2011 as its Germany and East European Correspondent and from 2011 to September 2013 as columnist. Ms Dempsey was the diplomatic correspondent for the Financial Times (FT) in Brussels from 2001-2004 onward, covering NATO and European Union enlargement. Prior to that she was based in Jerusalem, Vienna and Berlin for the FT.
