About the Speech:
Europe is facing the biggest refugee crisis since the end of the Second World War. Its effects are testing the fundamental basis of the EU, including one of its major achievements: Schengen as an area without internal border controls. In his address, Director General Ruete explained how the EU and its Member States are responding to the challenges of migration and why a concerted European approach is now required. He addressed both the internal and external dimensions of the relevant European policies taking account of them in the wider international context.
About the Speaker:
Matthias Ruete is currently the Director General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME). From 2010 to 2014, he was Director General of DG Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) and between 2006 and 2010 he was Director General for Energy and Transport (DG TREN). From 2000 to 2004, he was Director of DG Enlargement and in 2005, Mr Ruete became the Director of DG Enterprise and Industry. Matthias Ruete has a doctorate in law and lectured in Constitutional, European and International Public Law at Warwick University before joining the European Commission.
