About the Speech: Mr van Gemert first outlined the role of Europol and its approach to counter-terrorism. He explaind the motives for the establishment of the European Counter Terrorism Centre (ECTC), and how it is dealing with the changing nature of the threat from ISIS. He highlighted the role of the Internet Referral Unit (EU-IRU) and the extent to which terrorist groups such as ISIS use cyberspace and social media to further their aims and concluded by addressing the multifaceted challenges which confront Europol today.
About the Speaker: In May 2014, Mr van Gemert was appointed Deputy Director of Europol and Head of the Operations Department. Europol is the European Law Enforcement Agency based in The Hague which is tasked with assisting police forces in EU member states to counter serious crime and terrorism . He currently manages a Department staffed with over 300 experts, specialists and analysts, dealing with serious and organised crime as well as terrorism and cybercrime. In 2012, Mr van Gemert was appointed 2012 Director Cyber Security of the NCSC in the Netherlands. Prior to this, he was the Director of National Security at the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD); he also held the position of Director of Criminal Investigation in the National Police Agency, the KLPD.
