About the Speech:

On 19 September 2016, the UN General Assembly hosted the first of its kind High-Level Summit for Refugees and Migrants. The High-Level Summit is a historic opportunity to bring countries together to develop a more coordinated and humane international response to the ongoing migration crisis. In his address ahead of the High-Level Summit, Peter Sutherland discussed the international response to the migration crisis and development in the context of this ongoing humanitarian emergency.

 

This event was part of the 2016 Development Matters series, which the IIEA is co-hosting with Irish Aid.

 

About the Speaker:

In 2006, Peter Sutherland was appointed UN Special Representative of the Secretary General for International Migration. In this position, he was responsible for the creation of the Global Forum on Migration and Development. He is President of the International Catholic Migration Commission and a member of the Advisory Board of the International Organisation for Migration. Previously, he served as Attorney General of Ireland; European Commissioner responsible for Competition Policy; Chairman of Allied Irish Banks; the Director of GATT and then of the WTO; and Chairman of Goldman Sachs International.
