The large-scale uncontrolled arrival of migrants and asylum seekers has placed a strain not only on many Member States’ asylum systems but also the Common European Asylum System as a whole. In this context, Commissioner Costello discussed Ireland’s international protection system, its international and European influences and recent developments in Irish and European asylum policy.
About the Speaker:
As Ireland’s Refugee Applications Commissioner, David Costello is responsible for processing applications for refugee status and subsidiary protection, as well as applications for family reunification. Commissioner Costello is also the Deputy Chairperson of the Management Board of the European Asylum Support Office, which works towards a Common European Aslyum System. Prior to his current position, he was Director for Asylum Policy in the Department of Justice and Equality.
